YOMO: Intermedia

An intermedia art and technology project concerned with oceans and coastlines, speaking to environmentalism and climate justice. Presented at UC Irvine's Contemporary Arts Center and subsequently invited by Brown Arts Initiative for performances at the Granoff Center.

Dancers and musicians performed in an immersive environment featuring ocean and coastal locations, evoking aspects of natural beauty and environmental degradation. A larger virtual cast appeared in video projections created with the Active Space intermedia performance system, and a related series of animated films were presented in a multi-channel video installation. John Crawford assembled and led a transdisciplinary team of over 80 participants, consisting of faculty, students, guest artists and staff from UC Irvine, Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design. Working in a collaborative, iterative process during 2018-19, the team developed a series of intermedia performances and exhibitions responding to the natural beauty of oceans and coastlines, and to detrimental human impacts on ocean ecosystems. The performances were presented at Brown’s Granoff Center and UCI’s Contemporary Arts Center.

YOMO/Intermedia was developed as part of Your Ocean, My Ocean (YOMO), an ongoing art and design initiative dedicated to increasing awareness of the human-ocean relationship. Projects in the YOMO series demonstrate and illuminate ways in which the human desire to transform our environment is unleashing destructive forces that endanger the world and everything in it, including ourselves.
